Accents On The “ah” - Left Hand

Accents on the “ah” will always be on the left hand.

The red arrow indicates the “switch stroke”, where we lift the left hand up, at the same time the right hand is played on the “&”.

The “switch stroke” is a critical skill. Take time to isolate this with your students, as the video demonstrates. Getting the next accent hand up early is a reoccurring skill you will be teaching often.

Focus on the important concepts:

  • Make sure the student practices slowly. This means as slowly as needed to execute every action correctly.

  • Make sure they don’t squeeze the stick on the down stroke accents.

  • Make sure all inner beats are rebound strokes. The students will likely squeeze and choke off the rebound when they first attempt this.
