Morris Knolls High School Wins USSBA Grand National Championship in Percussion
Morris Knolls High School was named the overall USSBA Group 3 open State Champions with the award for best percussion. 2 weeks later they went on to not only be named USSBA National Group 3 Open Percussion Champions, but also won the Grand National title in percussion which is the award for the top score out every group.
The show was named "Greek Mythology". The opening brought forth the awesomeness of Mount Olympus and the fury of Zeus. The loud impacts of thunder was then followed by the gleaming sounds of Apollo on his chariot riding in from the sun. Cenotaph by Jack Stamp painted the picture for this movement. The pit served as a transition and brought the audience all the way underwater with La Cathédrale Engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral) which combined Debussy's unique chordal movement with the sounds of water gongs, rain sticks, and African talking drums. The winds then joined in and began the journey through Posiden's underwater kingdom with a beautiful arrangement of Lento for Brass by Phillipe Sparke. The closer, Ares, featured the music of Hans Zimmer from Batman Begins and Gladiator. Full of intensity from start to finish, the percussion was featured extensively as they portrayed a battle scene. Building tension with mechanical sounds such as chains, bells, metal, and cannons...the percussion built to a throw down session that lead to the back half of the closer.
